Hey friends and future neighbors! With autumn rolling into Mercer County, it’s the perfect time to swap out iced coffees for pumpkin spice lattes, lace up your hiking boots, and dig into the crisp-air magic our area does so well.
I’m here to share a fun, down-to-earth roundup of fall activities to do right here in Mercer County. Whether you already call this place home or you’re just daydreaming about mountain views and cozy neighborhoods, this list will help you fall in love with the area.
8 Fall Activities You Can’t Miss This Season
1. Take a Leaf-Peeping Drive
Mercer County’s hills put on quite the show come October. Think bright oranges, deep reds, and golden yellows painting every curve of the road. The “back roads” are where the real beauty hides winding through forests, farmland, and mountain overlooks that’ll make you pull over for that perfect “Instagramable” moment!
Peak color usually hits mid to late October, so plan your drives (and selfies) accordingly. And keep an eye out for the West Virginia themed swings around the area that make for beautiful pictures and unforgettable snapshots.

2. Go Waterfall Chasing
Forget filters fall foliage does all the editing for you. Brush Creek Falls is local favorite that becomes even more magical surrounded by autumn color. Bring a jacket, your camera, and maybe someone to share the view. Don’t forget the snacks!
3. Get Cozy with a Bonfire & S’mores
Mercer County nights in the fall are crisp, clear, and starry perfect for gathering around a fire. Light one up in your backyard or head to a local campsite, roast some marshmallows, and swap spooky stories. Bonus points if you can spot a shooting star between bites of chocolate.
4. Stock Up at the Farmers Market
The Mercer County Tailgate Market runs through the fall, offering pumpkins, apples, homemade jams, and all the autumn goodies you could want. It’s the perfect place to pick up décor for your porch or ingredients for that pumpkin bread recipe you swore you’d make this year.
5. Explore a Local Pumpkin Patch or Corn Maze
Nothing says “fall” like getting lost in a corn maze and pretending you’re not low-key panicking. Several local farms in southern West Virginia host pumpkin patches and mazes this time of year and are perfect for a family day out or a cute photo op (because if you didn’t post it, did it even happen?).
Grab a pumpkin for carving or just for decorating the porch. Either way, it’s a fall must-do.
6. Take a Scenic Hike Through Camp Creek State Park
If you’re craving fresh air and fall color, Camp Creek State Park delivers every time. The trails are mostly easy strolls, and the reward is stunning mountain scenery and peaceful forest views. Bring your dog and a picnic for one of the best ways to soak in the season.
7. Explore Downtown Princeton & Bluefield
Spend an afternoon strolling through the art galleries, boutiques, and coffee shops that make Mercer County’s downtown areas so vibrant. Between the murals, music, and friendly faces, you’ll see why so many people fall in love with our local charm.

If cozy fires and scenic drives aren’t enough adventure for you, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system has your name written all over it. Cooler temps make for perfect ATV riding weather, and the views are nothing short of spectacular this time of year.
